Mohandas Gandhi

Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India and when he was seven, he moved to Rajkot, India. His father was a dewan (prime minister) for the prince of Porandar. His mother taught him the Hindu religion and how to fast. He got married when he was thirteen. When he grew up, he moved to England and learned about law. He went to South Africa and preached against people not being treated kindly because of their skin color. Then he went back to India.

We remember him because he was brave and helped his people gain independence from the British. He fasted and prayed and got people to let the 'Untouchables', the lowest caste of Indians, be treated as children of God. He was shot while going to a prayer meeting.
