Pioneer Diary April 4, 1871

A tornado came today but luckily, Pa saw it coming and we all went down in the cellar and waited until it passed by. It was scary waiting and hoping that the house and fields would not be ruined. I had never seen a tornado before, but I had heard how horrible they could be. Pa took me out when the tornado was coming and I saw how it could take away all the work we had spent doing for the two years we had been here. The tornado was ripping up everything that was in its way. It was a black, swirling tube that was so ugly I turned and ran back under the ground. We waited for a long time and finally Pa said we would sleep in the cellar and tomorrow survey the damage. I pray that our neighbors are all right and our fields are safe.
