Pioneer Diary February 2, 1871

It started snowing again. Joseph went to school today with me because Pa didn't need him on the farm. We walked to school in the snow, bundled tightly in our winter coats and hats. It was a mile walk to school. When we got there, a pretty lady was ringing a bell to call everyone in. I met a girl my age named Betty and her brother played with Joseph. They live on a farm not far from ours. The teacher's name is Miss Colebrook and she is not very nice. When I hesitated on a spelling word she made me come up to the board and write my name and she smacked my hand with a ruler. On the first day of school! I suppose it was a reminder to the other students to always learn their lessons. I think I do not like school and Miss Colebrook.
