Pioneer Diary January 20, 1871

It is another cold day. I helped Mother make bread. In the middle of getting a jar of preserves out of the cellar, someone knocked on the door. Mother opened it and invited our distant neighbor in. After he had warmed himself with the cup of hot tea that Mother gave him, Mr. Silas told us that a school would be opening in February and anyone from the ages of seven to twenty would be allowed to come. Mother told him that two of her children were school age and they would be happy to come. She means Joseph and me! I can't wait until February when I can go to a real school.
