For many years Chile had military dictators like General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, a bad dictator and army general. After 16 years of military rule, Chile finally elected President Patricio Aywin in 1990. A new president of Chile was sworn in on March 12, 2006. She was the first female president of the nation. Michelle Bachelet, the new president, had been exiled, tortured, and put in prison because of the military dictators in Chile. She lives in Valparaiso, Chile, a heavily populated city.
